What do Dragonflies Eat?
A dragonfly nymph, which is a baby dragonfly, is born hungry. They will hatch from their eggs in water and then start to search for food immediately. They don’t have any wings, but they are quick enough to move through water and find insects. They can also escape from fish very quickly; they will go through the bottom of lakes searching for eggs, and for other foods because they can swim so well.
The nymph can beat any other water bug, which means they can hunt at any depth. They have gills that they breathe through, and they can launch themselves in the air as well. Dragonflies eat mostly mosquito larvae but are also known for taking worms, eggs and small fish. They have the ability to attack with a great deal of speed and power. Their long bodies funnel very quickly and shoot them forward like an arrow. People rarely see them because they spend the majority of their lives in the nymph stage hunting under water.
The adult dragonflies have a much different diet than the nymphs do. They are transformed into full-sized adults when they exit from water, and they will go extremely rapid changes for a couple of hours. This means that they will grow wings and take on a new kind of hunting. Their wings are very strong and when that is combined with their light structure, they can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour.
They have large eyes that can pick out moving targets and this makes them the terror of the skies. They will most often eat bees, flies, mosquitoes and anything that is small enough or fair game for their own size. They will catch prey by overtaking them and scooping them up in their strong legs. After they pick them up they can bite into their meal; the victim does not stand a chance because their jaws are very powerful.
Where Did They Come From?
The dragonfly is one of the most beautiful insects on the planet with their glimmering skin and their majestic wings but few people are aware of how good they are at being a master hunter. Did you know that they are a descendent of a prehistoric creature that has a two feet wide wingspan and is capable of catching animals that are the size of a cat? The modern ones are completely harmless toward anything but their prey.
Dragonflies are insects that are best known for their slender and long bodies with two translucent wings. There are more than 5500 species of dragonflies as of right now and there are more that remain a mystery to scientists. They all have six legs but those are used far more for hunting and catching their food than it is used for walking. The dragonflies are one of the fastest insects in the world; they are actually a very important food source for birds, lizards, fish, frogs as well as the large dragonflies. They play an important part in the food chain.
